An interview with Zero Density

First of all can you tell us a bit about Zero Density.
Founded in 2014 by 4 individuals with extensive working experience in broadcasting and media started working on the Reality EngineTM  product with the aim to break the mold and change the game in the post-production industry. Launched initially during 2016 NAB and won two innovations award in IBC 2017, Reality EngineTM  is the most photo-realistic virtual studio technology today. There were firms working on this area, but we launched it first which put us ahead in the game. Entire market set its eyes on us. Most live shows using gaming engine is done through our platform. Among our clients there are world leaders such as FOX Sports, Riot Games, Sky News Arabia and TF1.

AR & VR seems to be the killer application of broadcasting. There are many firms clamming to be different from others. What makes you different among them?
Blending real time visual effects with virtual production with advanced real-time compositing tools and its proprietary keying technology, Unreal Engine Native Reality EngineTM  is the most photo-realistic real-time 3D Virtual Studio and Augmented Reality platform in the industry. In addition to the power of Unreal Engine, flexibility and rendering quality, Reality EngineTM ’s tracking and shadowing capabilities and Reality KeyerTM  enable our client to create stunning contents. 3D massive environments can be created and by feeding data into the system you can have real time data driven graphics on air.
Virtual studio and augmented reality technologies are spreading rapidly but it is in inception point in our country. The only client in Turkey that produces without tech is TRT’s culture channel and the shows are world-class. They are shooting seven different shows in the same virtual set. For example, for Hülya Koçyiğit’s show they designed an amazing Bosphorus view that can only be seen standing in the Maiden’s Tower. Production with the help of our product produced such photo-realism that one column writer genuinely asked for the location of the place without realizing it was a virtual scene.

You have many references, which project or customer was the most interesting for you?
I believe the first customer holds a special place for every business and with our first customer TFO Groupe Media in Canada we won two prestigious industry awards the following year. So we can say that it is a special project for us.

On the other hand there are so many possibilities and areas where our product can be used, ranging from e-sports, live events, broadcasting, augmented reality and so on. There is always something new with each client project that takes it to one step further in photo-realism, creativity or in terms of immersive experiences.

What is your future plans?
Zero Density is initially an R&D company. Our goal is to create a difference, spot industry’s gaps and deliver the best products to answer those needs. As a result, we’re doing research and development in an array of areas. We are not the type of business to say, “here is our product, good luck”. We’re trying to support and give consultancy on every step of the way of virtual production in addition to Reality EngineTM . For instance, we created the first software defined green paint for cyclorama productions called RealGreen to help our clients to achieve highest possible realism. So, we will continue giving creative teams the finest tools to invent worlds and blend them with reality.

May HD Radio be an alternative for Turkey?

There are mainly three worldwide digital radio technologies: DAB/DAB+, DRM30/DRM+ and  HD Radio™ . According to some sector professional Turkey should not even think of  HD Radio™  as an alternative for the digitization of radio. I have some doubts on that. Lets have a closer look at  HD Radio™ : Who is behind the  HD Radio™ ? IBiquity  Digital is the firm that developed the  HD Radio™  technology. Some argues that as it is a firm, not a consortium, so broadcasters should avoid choosing  HD Radio™  as the digital radio technology. It sounds a little bit ambiguous. Why should broadcasters avoid using it? Do they avoid using Windows, for their PCs? Well, it is the same actually. Microsoft is a firm, that has a product, and broadcasters, like many others are using it. So, Ibiquity Digital is a firm like Microsoft. They have an approach to digital radio, with using FM band, they can digitize the r...

Shall we not build DTT, after WRC 2015

According to the news in the web site of EBU, 470 - 694 MHz will be reserved for DTT & radio microphones not only till WRC 2019, but also till WRC 2023. At the WRC 2023, 470 - 960 MHz band will be reconsidered. It is good news for the DTT business in Europe. But is it a good news for Turkey? As you may well know, Turkey has not yet spend any money on DTT. There is no DTT network, nor a finished frequency allocation tender. Hence, we can say that there is nothing, just NOTHING regarding DTT.  So, in best circumstances, the tender for DTT frequencies can be finished by 2016 & the network would be ready by 2017. Well, the picture becomes interesting from that point. The frequency allocation would be for 10 years, which covers 2016-2026. But, during the WRC 2023, the frequency usage will be reconsidered again. It may be more meaningful to think not to build DTT at all, and start thinking to work on xG mobile networks. I would appreciate for your comment...

8th Annual Digital TV Central and Eastern Europe Event

I attended to IP & TV World Forum and TV Connect events in Istanbul, which of both was organized by Informa. Having attended to these events, I am glad to say that I will have chance to follow the Digital TV Central & Eastern Europe Event on 25-27 June at Krakow, Poland.  Actually I have to thank to Informa, for their support in attending the event.  Main topics that will be covered in the event are OTT (Over The Top) TV and Pay TV. There will be a one day event dedicated to Over The Top Television. I will try to attend this event also, which will be on 25 June. In fact I think that OTT will replace classic IPTV offers, with the increase in smart tv, connected tv sales figures, need for a set top box will diminish. Therefore, this one day event is really important for the sector professionals.  When we look at the speakers of the event, one can easily understand the importance of the event. Some of the speakers are: Ian McDonough, Senior Vice Pres...
