e-interview with Varnish Software

Q1. Could you kindly provide a succinct overview of your company and the solutions showcased during IBC 2023?

Varnish Software is a leader in caching, streaming and content delivery software solutions. Our software helps content providers of any size deliver lightning-fast, reliable, and high-quality web and streaming experiences for huge audiences. With over 10 million deployments, including over 20% of the world’s top websites and leading video service providers, our technology is relied on by millions of organizations across every industry, with customers including Hulu, Emirates, Tesla, Sky, Migros, CBC and Future Publishing.

Varnish Software’s latest solutions are designed to optimize every layer of content delivery, from traffic routing and management all the way to content storage and access. Some of our new and latest solutions showcased at IBC include:

Varnish Enterprise 6 with the upgraded Varnish Controller 5.1 and Traffic Router  is the industry’s most feature-rich web cache and HTTP accelerator, with expanded features to ensure optimal user experiences by always distributing content from the best location.

Massive Storage Engine 4 is the most advanced solution for storing and managing cached objects and their metadata for large-cache scenarios like video distribution

●Updates on Varnish Software’s record-breaking content delivery performance, expanding on previous industry benchmarks set for speed, power and efficiency, including 1.3 Tbps throughput per edge server.

Q2. Among the solutions presented at your booth, could you specify which one garnered the most visitor attention, and could you offer insights into the factors contributing to its appeal?

Sustainability was one of the most talked about topics at IBC 2023. And our recent collaborations with Intel and Supermicro – achieving new performance and efficiency benchmarks – are a perfect example of how the industry is coming together to address this immediate and growing need.

With increasing concerns about sustainability, it's imperative that CDN technologies aren't just fast, but also energy efficient. Gbps per watt, which measures the data transfer rate for every unit of power consumed, is the best metric for us to track and optimize this balance.

Through this joint initiative, for the first time ever, we’ve achieved up to 1.18 Gbps per watt for live streaming and 0.73 Gbps per watt for VOD, which are massive leaps forward in power efficiency and performance. And we’ve recently published a whitepaper in conjunction with Intel, detailing how this was accomplished using only off-the-shelf hardware and software.

By optimizing Gbps per watt, organizations can pave the way for a future where tech is not only high performing, but also environmentally responsible and highly cost-efficient.

Q3. Does your company currently engage in any business activities within the Turkish market? If you can share, could you provide some insight into your plans for expanding your business in Turkey?

While we can’t comment on any specific Turkish companies we’re currently serving, Varnish Software is an international company, with a global impact.

Among the broad array of clients we work with, we frequently help broadcasters, telcos and streaming service providers around the world gain increased control while maximizing performance, efficiency, and costs.

We also play a big role in helping companies shift from traditional broadcasting to streaming, as this, along with the need to leverage existing infrastructure, can require more flexible and scalable CDN solutions.

Q4. Is there any additional information or insights you would like to share regarding your company or your participation in IBC 2023?

In addition to our other partnerships, Varnish Software is a founding member of the Greening of Streaming, which brings industry players from around the globe to advance sustainability.

We will continue to work with our partners to push the limits of content delivery and help any organization deliver the most throughput possible for every watt of energy.

May HD Radio be an alternative for Turkey?

There are mainly three worldwide digital radio technologies: DAB/DAB+, DRM30/DRM+ and  HD Radio™ . According to some sector professional Turkey should not even think of  HD Radio™  as an alternative for the digitization of radio. I have some doubts on that. Lets have a closer look at  HD Radio™ : Who is behind the  HD Radio™ ? IBiquity  Digital is the firm that developed the  HD Radio™  technology. Some argues that as it is a firm, not a consortium, so broadcasters should avoid choosing  HD Radio™  as the digital radio technology. It sounds a little bit ambiguous. Why should broadcasters avoid using it? Do they avoid using Windows, for their PCs? Well, it is the same actually. Microsoft is a firm, that has a product, and broadcasters, like many others are using it. So, Ibiquity Digital is a firm like Microsoft. They have an approach to digital radio, with using FM band, they can digitize the r...

8th Annual Digital TV Central and Eastern Europe Event

I attended to IP & TV World Forum and TV Connect events in Istanbul, which of both was organized by Informa. Having attended to these events, I am glad to say that I will have chance to follow the Digital TV Central & Eastern Europe Event on 25-27 June at Krakow, Poland.  Actually I have to thank to Informa, for their support in attending the event.  Main topics that will be covered in the event are OTT (Over The Top) TV and Pay TV. There will be a one day event dedicated to Over The Top Television. I will try to attend this event also, which will be on 25 June. In fact I think that OTT will replace classic IPTV offers, with the increase in smart tv, connected tv sales figures, need for a set top box will diminish. Therefore, this one day event is really important for the sector professionals.  When we look at the speakers of the event, one can easily understand the importance of the event. Some of the speakers are: Ian McDonough, Senior Vice Pres...

Disguise and Cuebric Launch AI-Driven Content Generator for Virtual Production

Disguise  — a world leader in virtual production technology used for  Top Gun: Maverick ,  The Joker  and more — has partnered with AI platform  Cuebric  to make virtual environments faster, easier and more cost-effective to build than ever before.  As part of the partnership, Cuebric has been integrated with the Disguise platform. This means creatives can now use AI to create the shape and depth of 2.5D environments, then import them into Disguise. The result is a plug-and-play scene that can be executed on an LED stage in only two minutes. This allows anyone to tell immersive stories, no matter the production environment or virtual art capabilities they have, saving weeks of pre-production work. “Real-time environments look spectacular on-camera, yet often require many hours of artistic and technical build,” said Addy Ghani, VP of Virtual Production at Disguise. “Thanks to our partnership with Cuebric, there’s now another option. Using generative AI,...
